Construction on the first stage of intersection upgrades along the Maroubra Road corridor will begin on Monday, 17 August, with works targeting two key intersections to improve safety for people walking, cycling, and driving.

The project will start with the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Cooper Street, Maroubra Road, and Mons Avenue, followed by another at the Maroubra Road and Flower Street intersection. Raised pedestrian crossings and a landscaped median strip will also be added, while the road through the upgraded sections will be reduced from four traffic lanes to two.
Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker said the works respond to community concerns about safety.
“Safety comes first,” Mayor Parker said.
“Locals have told us these intersections need improvement and I’m pleased we have been able to respond to community feedback and deliver significant safety improvements for the Maroubra community.”
Community Consultation Shaped The Project
The upgrades form the first stage of a broader plan for Maroubra Road between Bunnerong Road and Malabar Road. The overall project has been refined through community consultation since 2021, with future stages to be delivered as funding becomes available.
Detailed designs for the initial works have now been completed. Randwick councillor Danny Said said the project would introduce new roundabouts and raised pedestrian crossings at both intersections as part of the wider Maroubra Road corridor upgrades.
Construction is expected to bring temporary changes for road users. Drivers may encounter altered traffic conditions, detours and reduced on-street parking while work is underway, with nearby residents to receive advance notice through leaflet drops.

The redesigned intersections are intended to improve safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians through new roundabouts, raised pedestrian crossings and the revised road layout. The first stage will be followed by additional intersection upgrades along the Maroubra Road corridor as funding becomes available.
