Maroubra residents are seeking tighter safeguards around the Yorktown Parade demolition, with concerns centred on hazardous materials, neighbouring homes, heavy vehicles and tree impacts ahead of the 11 September submission deadline.
Yorktown Parade Demolition Under Exhibition
The Part 5 activity covers three residential buildings at 8–14, 16–22 and 24–30 Yorktown Parade, along with ancillary structures, associated site works and tree removal.
NSW Land and Housing Corporation is listed as the proponent under reference P5-2026-246. The proposal has been on exhibition through the NSW Planning Portal since 17 August, with submissions closing on 11 September 2026.
Documents published for the activity include a demolition work plan, hazardous materials report, demolition traffic and pedestrian management plan, waste management plan and arboricultural impact assessment.
Residents Seek Additional Site Protections
A campaign circulated among local residents has called for additional precautions before demolition begins.
The campaign flyer states that the hazardous materials report identifies asbestos-containing material and lead paint and argues that further intrusive assessment should take place before structural demolition. Residents have also sought pre-construction condition reports for adjoining properties and continuous vibration and noise monitoring during the works.
Heavy vehicle movements are another focus. The flyer calls for 12.5-metre rigid vehicles to be used instead of 19-metre truck-and-dog combinations and seeks restrictions on heavy vehicle movements during local school-zone hours.
Tree impacts have also been raised. While the official demolition activity includes tree removal, campaigners have specifically sought protection for a mature Mediterranean cypress identified in their material as Tree 4.
Community Discussion Differs On Hazmat Controls
Discussion among residents has not been uniform over the safeguards already contemplated for hazardous materials.
One commenter argued that additional testing and clearance would take place before hazardous material removal, followed by a soft strip ahead of mechanical demolition. Another resident responded that those measures were not sufficiently documented in the plan and continued encouraging neighbours to lodge individual submissions.
Residents have also used the Maroubra Community page to connect with others wishing to object to the proposal, including an invitation for affected neighbours to join a local group.
Current Process Limited To Demolition
Community posts have also referred to plans for a future seven-storey social housing redevelopment at 8–30 Yorktown Parade.
The current NSW Planning Portal exhibition does not assess that future building proposal. It is specifically for demolition of the three existing residential buildings and ancillary structures, associated site works and tree removal.
Public submissions on the Yorktown Parade demolition remain open through the NSW Planning Portal until 11 September 2026.
