Maroubra’s Newly-Opened Heffron Centre Now Offering Various All-Abilities Programs

Heffron Centre, the eagerly anticipated world-class facility in Maroubra, is now officially open to the public, offering an array of sports, dance, and gymnastic programs for people of all ages and abilities.

The indoor multipurpose facility boasts a two-court sports hall capable of accommodating various sports such as netball, basketball, badminton, volleyball, and indoor futsal. The site includes a dedicated gymnastics area featuring high-quality equipment, ensuring a safe and progressive environment for gymnasts to develop their skills.

BK’s Gymnastics Heffron Centre, a prominent program offered at the facility, has carefully curated classes to cater to various age groups and skill levels. The programs follow a two-week plan focused on skill competencies relevant to each developmental milestone, ensuring a safe and progressive approach for gymnasts.

From the Stepping Stars program for children as young as walking age up to 2 years, to the Gym Fundamentals, Club Gym, Ninja Stars, and All Stars Academy programs for older children and competitive gymnasts, there is something for everyone.

BK’s Gymnastics coaches incorporate elements such as strength, coordination, flexibility, mobility, support, and balance to help gymnasts progress to more advanced levels. Special events like Check-In Week and BK Carnival provide opportunities for participants to showcase their progress and celebrate their achievements.

Heffron Centre also introduces the Dance Society, a program aiming to bring dance to life within the Maroubra, Hillsdale, and surrounding communities. The Dance Society offers classes for preschoolers (3-5 years), Junior Hip Hop (6-14 years), and Open Dance classes.

The Open Dance class offers adults an opportunity to explore dance for the first time or relive their former dance glory days. These classes combine Jazz, Classical Ballet, and musical theatre, delivering a well-rounded and enjoyable experience for beginners and dance enthusiasts alike.

Not only does the Heffron Centre offer sports and gymnastics programs, but it’s now the new home and the high-performance centre of the South Sydney Rabbitohs. This facility also supports Souths Cares’ educational and community initiatives.

Moreover, visitors can enjoy various publicly accessible areas, including a café, a hall of fame, a merchandise shop, and a fan area with a view of the NRL standard showcase field, where training sessions can be observed.

ADCO Wins Tender for Heffron Centre Construction in Maroubra

ADCO, one of Australia’s top construction companies for the past 50 years, has secured the tender for the $58-million Heffron Centre construction in Maroubra.

Following a competitive process, the company was appointed on 3 Aug 2021 as the builder and centre operator of the new state-of-the-art sports facility, which will house the professional rugby league club, South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Following the decision by Randwick Council, work on the Heffron Community High-Performance Centre will begin in late August with an anticipated completion in late 2022.

ADCO is also behind the ongoing Brookvale Oval Redevelopment in the Northern Beaches and the redevelopment of the Concord Oval in Canada Bay.

“The new sporting complex will feature an indoor sports centre, gymnastics centre and new home for the South Sydney Rabbitohs who will move their headquarters and Souths Cares community outreach work from their spiritual home of Redfern into their south-east supporter heartland of Randwick City by the end of 2022,” according to Randwick Mayor Danny Said.

“It is funded by Souths and all three levels of Government and has been seven years in the planning. It will deliver more than 200 jobs during construction and more than 60 ongoing jobs through the operation of the facility.”

Randwick Council also negotiated for Belgravia Health and Leisure Group to manage the Heffron Centre for a 10-year lease. A multi-awarded company, Belgravia currently operates 190 sports facilities around Australia and New Zealand with a pool of 4,000 staff.

According to Mayor Said, Randwick Council is confident of the appointment of the head builder and centre manager, which both extensively demonstrated experience in their fields.

“I’m confident the partnership will provide high quality and well-run community facilities that will deliver for our communities for decades to come.”

Meanwhile, once completed, the Heffron Centre will be operating seven days a week and will have gymnastics programs for all ages and abilities. The indoor sports centre, on the other hand, will be a space for sports various community activities like netball, basketball, badminton, volleyball, and futsal.

Heffron Centre Development: Concept Design Unveiled, Project to Bring 200 Jobs

The concept design for the Heffron Centre development in Maroubra has been unveiled following a public consultation in April 2020. The planned multi-purpose, state-of-the-art sports facility will move on with the development application, with an estimated target date of construction in mid-2021.

The new Heffron Centre will include two indoor sports halls with spectator seating and ample storage spaces. This site will house the Community and High-Performance headquarters of the South Sydney Rabbitohs and Souths Cares.

Lecture rooms, gymnastic zones, training and operational areas, bathrooms for athletes and guests, as well as a merchandise shop were incorporated in the design, based on the residents of the locals.

Part of the centre will also include a cafe within an open plaza with both indoor and outdoor seating. The plaza is envisioned as a community hub for relaxation and socialisation.

An internal street will be built to link these facilities and connect the front and back of the site. Visitor areas for viewing the NRL training field will also be established.

“The concept designs have been informed by community feedback and are the result of more than four years of hard work, research, consultation and planning,” Randwick Mayor Danny Said stated in the unveiling of the concept design. “This is an exciting project that will see grassroots and elite sports co-exist at Heffron Park. It will also see the Rabbitohs move to their supporter heartland in Maroubra,” Mr Said added.

Randwick City Council and the South Sydney Rabbitohs were able to secure about $21 million in state and federal funding for the Heffron Centre. About 200 jobs will be generated once construction starts, with at least 60 ongoing jobs to be retained once the site is operational.

The Council expects the development to be completed in late 2022.
